“Spanish wind energy giant Gamesa has boosted its involvement in North America by joining the American Business Act on Climate Pledge and committing further to Mexico. One of the world’s leading wind energy manufacturers, Gamesa made two announcements on December 1 to coincide with the COP21 United Nations climate negotiations currently being held in France. Gamesa first announced that it had joined the American Business Act on Climate Pledge, joining more than 140 existing companies from across the American economy that have already taken the Pledge to stand with President Obama and his administration in demonstrating an ongoing commitment to climate action. Segmented lightning diverters provide protection from strikes and near strikes. Wind turbine blades are very susceptible to lightning strikes, even when lightning does not directly attach to the blades. The rapidly changing and extremely strong electric fields in thunderstorms create electrical activity along the blades which can degrade the blade’s dielectric strength. Once the dielectric strength is reduced the lightning protection system on the blade, typically tip receptors, is less effective. Segmented lightning diverters can reduce the electrical stress on the blade and maintain the efficiency of tip receptors. Can Segmented Lightning Diverters Protect Your Blades from Near Strikes? Read all about the effects of near strikes in our article in Windpower Engineering & Development here:...
